Character & Leadership

The following programs assist youth in acquiring the basic skills needed to participate in the democratic process, which, in turn molds them into responsible, caring citizens. These programs develop planning, leadership and decision-making skills, plus provide opportunities for community contribution.

Keystone Clubs
Keystone Clubs teach small group leadership skills to youth ages 14-18. Members elect officers as well as choose, plan and implement community service projects along with other activities. A national charter entitles Keystone Clubs to participate in the national Keystone conference. Each year, members from across the country gather to exchange ideas, discuss current issues, and make friends.

Youth of the Year
In existence for more than 50 years, the Youth of the Year program recognizes achievers in academic excellence, club/community service, and family/spiritual contribution. Local winners are chosen annually by each club. They then represent their club in Central Oregon competition. From there they can possibly go on to state, regionals and the nationals. Redmond's club produced Oregon's Youth of the Year in both 2000 and 2001. The Reader's Digest Association sponsors the program.

Torch Club
Torch Clubs are chartered small-group leadership and service clubs for ages 11-13. Torch Club members elect officers as well as plan and implement activities focusing on education, club/community service, health/fitness and social recreation.
